Albin Baecker - master craftsman and scientist Albin Baecker grew up in Scotland. Of Polish, French and Scottish descent, he was raised to respect high standards and value the quality of perfection in all things. Baecker established his credentials in wood science some thirty years ago, with a Ph.D. in Wood Science followed by a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship in Wood Preservation. He then became an Associate of the Institute of Wood Science and a Member of the Insititute of Biology before heading to Africa to study its hardwoods . Baecker became a Chartered Natural Scientist and studied African hardwoods at several South African universities. In the course of ten years, he supervised over twenty successful M.Sc. and Ph.D projects in Wood Science and established several important theories in the field. He published over 150 papers in the world's scientific press and in the process became Professor and Head of the largest Microbiology Department in the country. See the Literature Section for the curriculum vitae and list of publications of Albin Baecker. Over the past decade, Baecker, with over 40 international patents granted, began to establish practical applications in Wood Science. He invented several environmentally acceptable wood preservatives and under the company banner of Biotrans-UK Limited also invented the Field Liner for the conservation of wooden utility poles. During this time, he studied furniture design and created bespoke pieces from African hardwoods, acquiring a deep insight into wood science and craftsmanship. He experimented with his knowledge of wood and its various finishes in the laboratory, testing his designs as models in the workshop and finishing them as items of fine furniture in the studio.
